The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
