Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
