Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
